When you’re away for several days, a house-sitting pet sitter keeps small and exotic companions on stable routines while safeguarding habitats that can change quickly. The visit plan starts with written instructions (diet, dosing, lighting/heating schedules, enrichment, emergency contacts), a supply check, and clear communication (time-stamped updates with photos/video).

Birds (parrots, cockatiels, finches). Daily fresh water and measured pellets/seed plus safe produce; swap cage liners, spot-clean perches, and rotate toys for enrichment. Maintain consistent light cycles; provide social time (talking/target stick). Monitor droppings, appetite, and feather condition; avoid aerosols and Teflon/PTFE sources.

Rabbits. Twice-daily care: unlimited grass hay, measured pellets, leafy greens; constant clean water. Scoop litter boxes; refresh hay racks; check for GI slowdown (reduced fecal output, lethargy). Supervise exercise in a bunny-proofed space; inspect hocks, nails, and coat mats; keep temps cool.

Hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, guinea pigs. Refill water bottles and spot-clean bedding daily; deeper clean on a set cadence to avoid stress from full substrate replacement. Guinea pigs need vitamin-C-rich veggies and quality pellets; provide hides, chews, and tunnels. Watch weight, breathing, and teeth length; log behavior changes.

Ferrets. AM/PM feeding and water refresh; scoop litter and tidy hammocks. Ferret-proof free play (block gaps, recliners, cords); check ears/teeth; note signs of insulinoma if listed in the care plan (weakness, drooling). Provide enrichment (dig box, toys) and keep temps moderate.

Snakes. Confirm thermostat set points and hot/cool-side temps; verify locks and humidity. Feed only as scheduled (no live prey left unattended); remove uneaten food; spot-clean waste. Track sheds (retain eye caps?) and record handling tolerance.

Lizards (geckos, dragons, skinks). Check UVB bulbs and basking temps; mist or provide humid hides as species require. Prepare salads/insects per plan; dust with calcium/D3 where specified. Clean surfaces, monitor toe and tail health, and avoid cohabitation if not usual.

Turtles/tortoises. For aquatic species, verify heater/filtration, skim debris, and top off evaporated water with conditioned or RO/DI; for tortoises, maintain warm, dry basking and fresh greens. Observe shell/skin and eyes; schedule soaks if directed.

Fish (freshwater/saltwater). Use pre-measured feed—underfeeding is safer than overfeeding during travel. Check heaters, lights, filter flow, and surface agitation; top off evaporation (no large water changes unless trained/approved). Remove visible waste with a net.

Specialized/medical tasks (non-veterinary). Administer oral/topical meds as prescribed; keep a dosing log. For fragile species (newly rehomed birds, neonate rodents, recovering reptiles), book two daily visits to protect feeding, hydration, and temperature windows.

Safety & sanitation. Wash hands and tools between habitats; use species-safe cleaners; secure doors/windows and label enclosures. Your sitter closes each visit with a checklist (food/water, environmental readings, waste removed, locks armed) and a message recap.
